Hotel Barcelo Margaritas Gran Canaria
7 / 10
It’s a 25-minute walk down Avenida Tirajana to the Mirador de las Dunas above Playa del Inglés beach. There is a regular free shuttle bus service to the playa. You can reach the hotel from the airport along the GC-1 in just over 20 minutes.
Style & character
The tropical fauna camouflages an almost anonymous exterior, and this greenery provides shade and respite from Playa del Inglés’ concrete jungle. A bright interior makeover provides colour the grey and white façade lacks.
Service & facilities

Despite visiting in April, it felt like summer had arrived with a DJ spinning classic reggae tracks next to the main pool (one of three on the complex). The beauty salon, offering treatments including aromatherapy, and adjoining sauna opens Monday through to Saturday. A meeting room provides conference space. There’s a crazy golf course and a fitness studio with a high-energy boxing workout available. Balinese beds and hammocks offer the opportunity of a serious siesta.

My eighth-floor Superior comprised wooden floor, two single beds plus a convertible sofa, a 32-inch LCD television, and a bathroom with rainfall shower. The balcony overlooked the gardens and pools. The Superior Family accommodation is slightly more spacious, with room for four guests rather than three. Both are modern with a crisp finish.

Food & drink
The basement buffet restaurant, open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner goes big on the internationally-sourced platters. It’s largely indistinguishable from the offerings of most chain hotels on Gran Canaria, although the different honeys available at breakfast break the monotony with rosemary, eucalyptus, and orange-blossom varieties.
As did dinner at Aloha 37, a grill restaurant in the gardens at which Barceló Margaritas guests get a fifth off their bill. Look out for Argentinian and Uruguayan cuts alongside Canarian and Moroccan seasoning. By day, there are self-service snacks including salads, pizza and chips accompanied by draught lager and soft drinks.
Value for money
Half-board and all-inclusive packages are available. Tariffs are dynamic, changing throughout the year - they can go as low as €104 (£82) a night per couple for a half-board stay in May (€150 [£119] for all-inclusive) and as high as €398 (£315) a night per couple for a half-board stay over New Year (€446 [£353] for all-inclusive).
Access for guests with disabilities?
Yes. Six of the Superior rooms have been adapted for disabled visitors, with walk-in showers. Public areas are accessible by wheelchair and there’s a lift to each floor.
