Puerto Rico lies on the southern coast of Gran Canaria beyond the dunes of Maspalomas to the east. This beautiful resort is built around a lovely bay with shiny marinas providing shelter at either end. The resort is built into the rocky coastline and stretches back up the hill from the beach.

The main beach is the focal point for holidays in Puerto Rico. The gently shelving and well sheltered beach is perfect for families. A short walk away is the equally impressive beach in Amadores. Puerto Rico is also a lively place after dark with two commercial centres the hub of the action. Explore the coast via boat and get up close and personal with the amazing sand dunes of Maspalomas.

Puerto Rico at a glance

Puerto Rico is on the south west tip of the island of Gran Canaria. The holiday resort has grown out of a traditional fishing village into a modern, lively, holiday centre. Puerto Rico is built into the hillside and the hotels and apartments appear to flow down into the ocean at times.

Shoppers delight

The resort is really accessible with two prominent marinas at either end of the main beach providing not only a picturesque setting but also a nicely sheltered beach. The resort spreads up the hill with the majority of the accommodation set into the hillside. There are two significant commercial centres and a wide range of place to eat and drink.

Family fun

The southern end of Gran Canaria offers some great opportunities for days away from the beach. The Lago Taurito water park has something for everybody and is only a short drive from Puerto Rico. It is also worth heading inland either by bus or car and explore the wonders of this mountainous island. The peak of Roque Nublo is accessible on foot and the panoramic views of the island and ocean are well worth the effort.

On the beach in Puerto Rico

The central beach in Puerto Rico will be at the centre of your holiday plans. The gently shelving beach with stunning harbours at either end provides the perfect back drop for a lazy day soaking up the sun. If you need a change, take a short walk around the headland (20 minutes) and take in the delights of Amadores beach.

If you prefer to swim in the pool there is a nice pool a short walk from the beach.

Eat and drink in Puerto Rico

The resort offer the very best of both local and international food options. You will find plenty of dining options along the beach front. Find a restaurant near the marina and enjoy a view of the yachts moored in the harbour. The Paseo Maritimo runs the length of the Puerto Rico beach and links the marinas at either end. You can also take your pick of both local and international favourites at the Puerto Rico Centre.

Puerto Rico is quite hilly but taxis are relatively cheap. Use them to help you make the most of the resort.

Puerto Rico nightlife

Head into the night and try one of the many bars and clubs that make Puerto Rico such a popular choice for holidaymakers. A lot of the late night fun tends to centre on the two commercial centres – Europe and Puerto Rico. There are also some nice bars to be found around both the Escala and Base marinas.

The Puerto Rico Shopping Commercial Centre is the largest and most popular of the various centres in and around the resort. Start here if you’re new to Puerto Rico.

The Europe Centre and the Puerto Rico Centre offer the best of local shopping opportunities coupled with a wide range of places to eat and drink both day and night. Both centres are located within the resort and easily accessed regardless of where you stay in Puerto Rico.

Things to see in Puerto Rico

Get active and sign up for a sailing lesson or maybe a spot of deep sea fishing. If you want to enjoy a more sedate life on the ocean waves, consider either a glass bottomed boat tour or a dolphin watching cruise. Call in at the marina and see what is on offer. Alternatively, head further afield and explore the Maspalomas sand dunes. They form part of a seven mile long stretch of beach that leads into the resort of Playa del Ingles. This nature reserve is a must for the family.
